ABOUT ME Kirstine Douglas - Producer, Rider of show horses and ponies, and coach of young riders is based on the outskirts of Dumfries, Scotland, just off the A75. With early riding skills being taught by Sheila Cooper, she quickly learnt the skills of riding with seat and leg and hence being able to get the best possible performance from the horse, and carried on to learn the skills of breaking and schooling young horses. At the age of 16 Kirstine’s capabilities her into Robert Oliver’s yard for further coaching in International classes, spending almost 5 yrs in this yard as head girl before setting up business in Staffordshire. As the business grew, bigger premises were found in Lancashire but Kirstine finally moved back to Dumfries even bigger, permanent premises at the family yard. In 1988, her first year of producing she hit success with CAKILE winning the British Open Arab ridden title, a novice small hack FABIAN won at the SHCRHA national championships and a cob BEAUMONT won at Royal Windsor. At her home, Kirstine has 18 stables and 30 acres of grassland, which is well utilised allowing all her horses time to relax and enjoy life to the full. Her approach to breaking and schooling of horses and ponies is also tailored to each individual animal. “I do believe in taking my time, and not rushing them or opting for a quick fix. I treat every horse or pony as if it was my own. If I’m breaking a youngster, and he needs longer, I’m happy to wait a couple of extra weeks before I get on him – I believe this pays off in the long run, as he will be a better horse for it if I take my time at this stage.”
